How to Pick a Domain Name
When it comes to domain name registration & how to pick a domain name, there are some really good one and some really bad ones. I will show you how to find an excellent, keyword rich domain name to register for your site or to sell for a profit. Unfortunately, all the one word domain names are long gone but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any good ones left.
In fact, there are millions of excellent domain names just waiting for you to register. If you follow the steps I outline here, you will soon be the owner of one of the better domains available for purchase from the register of your choice. When I bought my first domain name in 1997, there was only one place you could buy them from and that was network solutions. They had a monopoly on the market and charged like $70 a year.
Today however, things have changed for the better. There are many domain name registers like GoDaddy.com, Enom.com, NameCheap.com & Register.com just to name a few. Ideally, you want a domain name that describes what your site or business is all about in as few words as possible that contains your main keyword for your website or business.
Preferably one that gets hundreds of thousands of searches a month with very little competition. The less competition for the keyword, the easier it will be for you to rank higher in the search engines.
If you want to find a good, keyword rich name for your business website as described above, follow these steps and you will find the best possible domain available for your website.
It is important to follow these steps to find your name. The reason is because if you go to Godaddy.com and type a keyword rich name to see if it is available and you find that it is, if you don’t buy it right then and there, GoDaddy will. They have done this to me several times and it is really aggravating. If you don’t believe me, click through and visit Godaddy.com and run a check to see if a domain name you have in mind is available, don’t buy it, and try it again in 3 - 10 days. You will see that it is gone and if you do a whois search on it, you will see that GoDaddy themselves snapped it up.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that GoDaddy is not a good company at all. I love them and have more than 450 names registered through them. I’m just pointing out that they will snag your precious domain name unless you follow my steps. If you do, you don’t have to worry about that plus it’s a much faster way to find the perfect, keyword rich domain name…if there is such a thing.
1. Go to Google’s external keyword tool.
2. Type in your sites main keyword. For our example, let’s say it’s gardening, fill in the captcha and click on the “Get Keyword Ideas” button.
3. Next, click on the “Approx Avg Search Volume” text link. Now all your keywords are in order from highest to lowest search volumes.
4. Now go through the list and all the keywords that get at least 4,000 searches a month, click on the “Add” text link to the right. If you want, for simplicity’s sake, just click on the ” Add All 185″ or however many keywords are in the list.
5. On the right side of the page where all the keywords you selected are added, scroll to the bottom and right click on the “text” link and choose “Open in a New Window”. Now scroll back down to the bottom and click on the “text” again, when you are prompted, click on “open”. This will open all the keywords in a text file. Place your curser inside the text file and right click on your mouse and choose “Select All” and it will highlight all the keywords. Now right click again and choose “copy”. All the keywords are now copied to your clip board.
6. Next, go to KeywordMixer.com (Opens in a New Window). Now place your mouse cursor in the first box on keywordmixer and right click this time choosing “paste”. Now all of your keywords are pasted into the first keyword mixer box. Make sure there are no apostrophes or other characters.
7. To the right of the 3 boxes, check mark the box “Remove All Spaces” and click on the “Combine” button. Now place your mouse curser at the beginning of the first keyword, left click on your mouse and hold it down and drag the highlight to the last keyword highlighting them all. Now place your mouse cursor over the highlighted area and right click, choose “copy” and they are now copied to your clip board.
8. Next paste them back into the text file. Now you have all your keywords with no spaces in a text file.
9. Now we want to go to GoDaddy’s bulk register (Opens in a New Window).
10. Paste in all your keywords with no spaces into the box. You can paste up to 500 keywords in. Then to the right, check the .com box, enter the access code and click on the search button. Now scroll down and in the box you pasted your keywords in will be a list of all keyword rich .com domain names available for registering.
11. Next go back to the Google External Keyword tool and at the top above all the keywords click on the “Keywords” text link and it will place all the keywords in alphabetical order. Now switching back and forth between your list of keyword rich domain names that are available for registration from GoDaddy and Google’s external keyword tool, choose the domain name that has the most searches. Many times you will find that picking domain names like this will allow you to register domain names that get type in traffic because chances are if it is a 2 or 3 keyword rich name, many times they will type in into their browsers address bar and add a .com to it and see what if a site pops up.
I hope your find this as useful as I do. Just while laying out my methods here I found a domain name that averages 90,500 searches a month and had a search volume of 135,000 for January so I bought it. It was nurserygardening.com, can you believe that was even available? That is an excellent domain name.
